By Ellen Weaver Staff Writer Major sports teams have plenty of them and many college riots have been caused by them; sports fan can be a wild group. So what is Red Lions’ own Rowdies doing to bring enthusiasm to school sporting events? Before the Rowdies were formed, Red Lion had not had any large student sections in years. By using clever theme nights and general team spirit, the Rowdies have been able to bring about a group of students throughout all grades to cheer on Red Lion’s sports teams. Junior Austin Kelly is the unofficial leader of this group. he leads chants, movements, and is in charge of bringing about the general rowdiness of the Rowdies. Many believe the Rowdies are having a positive effect on both the players and students who are participating. “The Rowdies support shows how committed we are to our teams and creates positive energy for our teams to build off of,” Kelly said. “I think the students really enjoy participating in the themes for every game and to get them excited for this season, I will be letting the students vote for school appropriate themes on twitter @TheLionsDome.” Neon Night, Black and Gold, American Night, Hawaii, Christmas, and Camo are just some of the themes the Rowdies have planned for the upcoming basketball season. Jenna Hevner, a senior who participated in many of this seasons football student sections, believes that the Rowdies increase school spirit at athletic events. “It made it more pumped,” Jenna said, “The Rowdies make the teams wanna play better.”

Co-Editor-In-Chief The Lady Lions snapped Dover's win streak Friday night in an epic YAIAA match-up. The Lady Eagles entered the game with an impressive resume of not only a large win streak, but an undefeated record making them the No. 1 team in the league. Dover's Megan Lokhaiser promised competition for the Lady Lions as she registered a 3-pointer in her team's opening possession. However, it didn't take long for Red Lion's Courtney Dimoff to break Dover's only lead of the night as she responded with a trifecta of her own, accepting the challenge. Devan Horka continued to keep the hosts' offense alive as she registered nearly half of her team's first-half points, putting the Lady Lions ahead by 7 at the end of the second quarter. Dover's Alayah Hall was committed to respond to the deficit her team was facing but simply could not meet the net as Red Lion's defense remained relentless in the second half. The charity stripe wasn't a solution for Hall as she only went 3 for 8 coming out of the locker room. One of Hall's opportunities arose with less than 20 seconds left in regulation as she was awarded a pair. Hall could only sink 1-of-2 forcing the game to go into overtime. Morgan Kuehne continued to prove to be the catalyst for her team in the game's extra period as she scored all five of the Lady Lions' points. Dover's Lindsey Fowler tried to keep up, but her 3 points were not enough to keep the Eagles' win streak alive. Red Lion (42) vs. Dover (40) Funke 3 0-0 6, Morgan Kuehne 6 4-5 16, Devan Horka 6 0-0 12, Maciejewski 0 0-0 0, Kendrick 1 0-0 2, Dimoff 2 0-1 6. Totals 18 4-6 42. Red Lion 9 11 10 7 5 -- 42 Dover 7 6 11 13 3 -- 40 3-point goals -- Do 4 (Lokhaiser 3, Hall), RL 2 (Dimoff 2) JV score -- Red Lion 34, Dover 20 "The goals have not changed, nor have the expectations..." -Lady Lions head coach Don Dimoff By Ben Otte Co-Editor-In-Chief In high school sports, usually teams with high seniority reap much success. Seniors Morgan Kuehne (verbal commit to York College) and Devan Horka will hightire the leadership position, but will not do so alone. During the off-season schedule, it was the underclassmen that stepped up and assumed key roles on the squad. “Our goals for this year have not changed than from any others, and I think the girls really buy into that,” head coach Don Dimoff said. “They know how much success this program has seen and they want to continue just that.” While guards Kasey Seitz and Kelsey Clever have graduated from the program, the Lady Lions’ perimeter game will not be put on hold. Sophomore Courtney Dimoff, a huge threat from behind the three-point arch, returns to the squad. Junior Julia Kendrick who highlighted tremendous high-pressure defense in her first varsity appearances last year looks to improve her game as one of this season’s starting five. Coach Dimoff is fully aware that he has lost some inside presence with the graduation of Jenny Horvatinovic, who has moved on to play Div. I ball at Monmouth University, but rising underclassmen Taylor Funke and Kami Harvey can ensure offensive efficiency with accurate passing and quick ball-handling skills. Another new addition is junior LaDena Eames who should be able to provide valuable minutes at either guard spot as she has proven tough on-ball defense in both of the team's scrimmages. Despite the fact the majority of the varsity squad has seen minimal varsity minutes, Dimoff says the same expectations he has had in years past remain the same. “I don’t believe in rebuilding years. The goals have not changed, nor have the expectations. We’re at a level we are capable of playing.” In addition to the returning players, Dimoff added three freshmen to the mix: Kynslee Shepherd, Amy Maciejewski and Natalie Reba. “These girls have played a lot together and should really be able to help us out down the road,” Dimoff notes. Looking ahead, Dimoff says his team has worked very hard in the off-season and is very eager to continue the work that has been started. This article also appeared on the Lady Lions' official website and was reposted with permission. Photo by Michael Connors By Ben Otte Junior Editor When compared to the last three years, this is perhaps one of the better boys basketball teams Red Lion has put together. Senior Kevin Hutchinson and junior Michael Fox bring broad presence on the court, leading the team in scoring -- combining for a game average of roughly 28 points. "We're pretty young," says head coach Steve Schmehl, "We're starting to gain a lot of experience. They (the players) are learning." Currently, the team is ranked in the District III AAAA Top 20- something the Red Lion Boys Basketball program hasn't seen for quite a few years. Surely, when a young team is this successful early on, it can only mean they have an even brighter future ahead. Blake Cahill and Evan Miller, also starters for the varsity squad, provide a well-balanced attack. While Miller plays the role of a quick point guard with explosive speed, Cahill’s height advantage opens up more scoring opportunities in the high post. Matt Wanbaugh comes off the bench to stretch the defense and to pull down key rebounds. In addition, young, talented freshmen like Huson, McCreary, and Rebuck, add evident depth and significant contributions as well. With lone senior Hutchinson and plenty of underclassmen to fill the remaining slots in the rotation, it seems that the Lions have a solid lineup that has the ability to play at a high level. "If we play like we're capable of playing, we could compete with anybody." says Michael Fox who points out that a deep run in the postseason is definitely not out of their reach. By Whitney Johnson
Staff Writer Red Lion girl’s basketball is still pushing through their season with a winning record. There is a short amount of time left for the regular season while the chase to districts, and counties is coming around the corner. The girl’s will have to win all their games to secure a place in districts. Coach Dimoff says, “[We are] working hard, but we still need to keep getting better,” he continues, “The key is finding a way to beat the tough teams.” With four seniors on the team there is room on the court for the underclassmen coming through. “Team chemistry is great, [the] kids are sticking together, and with a younger team it always helps getting valuable experience to continue the traditions.” Early in January the girls competed in the Philly Classic, where they lost against one of the best teams in the state. “We are very pleased with how we competed. “ says Dimoff. The loss will go on their record, but has no effect on the teams post-season games. |
